GP down south Mental Health Services
GP down south is funded by the WA Primary Health Alliance to provide the South West Mental Health Portal which is a range of primary mental health services delivered through a stepped model of care.
Our team of experienced Mental Health Professionals will provide assessment, care coordination and the development of a recovery plan in partnership with clients. The stepped care model will provide a range of low intensity evidence-based interventions and psychological therapies through a range of modalities including telehealth, e-health and face to face sessions.
To be eligible to access the service, you must:
- Be diagnosed with, or at risk of developing, a mild to moderate mental illness
- Hold a current Health Care/Pension Card
- Reside in the Great Bunbury or South West regions of Western Australia
- Not be in crisis or require urgent assistance
Referrals can be accepted from your GP or other health professionals.

Additionally, we are working with General Practices and other mental health service providers in the region to support people with severe and persistent mental illness in the primary care setting.

Three Tier Youth Mental Health Program
Working in partnership with Blackwood Youth Action and secondary schools, the 3 Tier Youth Mental Health Program is a unique approach to youth mental health encompassing mental health awareness, prevention and intervention for secondary school students. The program breaks down the barriers and stigmas around mental health, promotes discussion, encourages help seeking behaviours and provides individual treatment and support to those in need.
The program objectives are to:
- Increase awareness of mental health and wellbeing and where to get help
- Increase knowledge of helpful and unhelpful behaviours for improved mental health and wellbeing
- Improve access to appropriate, individualised support for young people with mental health concerns
Tiers 1 and 2: Year 10 secondary school students
Tier 3: 12 to 25 year olds.
Services Provided by Blackwood Youth Action and GP down south
Tier 1 involves an awareness raising presentation delivered by an Ambassador with lived experience of mental illness. Issues such as physical and mental wellbeing, overcoming life’s obstacles, peer pressure, how to ask for help and the importance of leadership and teamwork are addressed.
Tier 2 involves school based workshops provided by Blackwood Youth Action. A range of topics are covered around mental health and wellbeing in a safe supported environment.
Tier 3 provides one on one support for 12 to 25 year olds through psychological therapies provided by Allied Health Professionals contracted by Blackwood Youth Action. Referrals to tier 3 can be made by completing the referral form on the GP down south website.
