Rural & Remote Mental Health Conference

November 2017

Earlier in the year the mental health team prepared and submitted an abstract to present at the biennial Rural and Remote Mental Health conference which is run by WACHS.

The abstract was chosen out of a strong field of submissions and a joint presentation was made by GP down south and our partner WAPHA at the Broome Conference in October. 327 delegates, 40 carers and consumers and 84 speakers congregated to share stories, programs and projects from various fields within mental health.  Jackie Bowser, Primary Mental Health Program Coordinator, Nicola Hillyard, Integrated Chronic Disease Management Program Coordinator and Jasmine Brown from WAPHA presented the Stepped Care model we are now delivering throughout the south west.  GP down south is funded by the WA Primary Health Alliance to provide the South West Mental Health Portal which is a range of primary mental health services delivered through a stepped model of care.

The conference offered two and a half days of presentations, keynote speakers and workshops.  The networking was valuable as was hearing about other projects and hearing stories from around the state and interstate.  Jackie Bowser, Program Coordinator, said the highlight was listening to stories of service providers and communities working together to develop programs based on local needs
